Catherine Norman's Favourite Images
A letter recently arrived in the post addressed to the 'Catherine Norman Gallery' and in many ways the gallery could be called this as Catherine is the driving force behind the gallery managing supplies and production and logistics and finances and the list could go on. Giles and Catherine have been married for over 30 years and for as long as they've been married, they've also been business partners. Catherine has seen Giles's portfolio grow from 20 images to over 2,000 images, and she's also seen the gallery through a recession, a pandemic, and a second gallery location with a 16-year stint in Dublin (which Catherine opened when she was six-months pregnant). Giles would be the first to admit that their business wouldn't be what it is today without Catherine. And seeing as it's Catherine's birthday next week, we thought we'd ask her to share her favourite images from Giles's portfolio.

"I’ve been really lucky to have accompanied Giles on most of his trips over the years. We visited Venice in 1997 when Jack, our eldest son, was just two, and then again in 2006 where we took a boat trip out to Torcello, the island where Venice began. There were miles and miles of fishing posts emerging from the mist and this solitary bird sitting on one is such a strong memory for me."

"Coumeenole beach has been such a huge success for the gallery that it’s hard not to put this on my favourites list. I love the composition of this image: the blackness of the rock and the lightness of the spray and the Great Blasket Island in the background. I didn’t join Giles on his trip to the Great Blasket Island last summer, but I’m finally getting to stay on it this week with him and I'm excited to experience this beautiful island."

"Immersing ourselves in a city is one of my favourite things to do on a trip away – having our coffees with the locals and buying lunch in the deli where they get to know you – and Rome was a great city for doing just that. The Rome collection as a whole is one of my favourites, but I particularly love this image with its different layers and of course the iconic Colosseum in the background."

And I'm not alone – it's been hugely popular with gallery visitors ever since Giles released it into the gallery a few years ago."
