Alaska 2023

Alaska 2023

Landscape photographers love wilderness, and there's no greater wilderness than the snow covered mountains of Alaska. A place that has waited patiently at the bottom of my photographic bucket. A state the size of a continent, its vastness and remoteness made it hard to choose a starting point, and my first entry into Alaska was a little left field and not the way I had imagined.

I have to thank the 19th deck of a Norwegian cruise ship and the beauty that is Glacier Bay for the heart of this collection. Running between port to starboard as the ship glided silently through its snow trapped waters I must have looked a little crazy to the other traveler's as I spent hour upon hour filling my memory cards full of the Alaskan wilderness. As we traveled inward from the mouth of Glacier Bay white dressed mountains would appear and disappear behind each other, like snow white children in a play, each mountain being eclipsed by the next as it took center stage. I stood in wonder at each one and applauded with my camera as the ship passed through one of nature's greatest theaters.

Dark foreboding skies would be pierced by the sun's sharpest rays and the light would fall like silver onto the sea, low clouds would rest on high mountains like hats on a snowman, small islands would hang there beauty in the deadest of waters while loose snow would gather weight and roll into the sea, untroubled waters would grow bored and paint patterns, and all this I could photograph while resting my elbows on the railings of a ship.
