A street photographer lost in the landscape
People often ask me about my style and how I capture some of my more singular images while still being a landscape photographer. I guess the answer lies in my earlier influences and not being constrained by any formal photographic teaching. Common learning and belief would tell you to use a tripod for landscape work, be patient and wait. The great street photographers of the 1940s and 1950s (Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson and Brassaï) would search the streets with camera in hand ready to capture the decisive moment and, if missed, move onto the next possibility. I guess I took their influence and methods and used it in the landscape. One camera, one lens, no tripod and no patience and there was no one to tell me I shouldn’t, no teacher to tell me I couldn’t. A lucky collision between ignorance and influence.
